“Can you quote a 1.8m high Steel Tubular Fence?”
We receive inquiries like this from overseas buyers.
Yes, we can quote it. But height alone does not tell our production team what the panel should look like.
We still need to know the width. Then the pickets. Then the gap between them. Rail size, tube wall thickness and posts also need to be confirmed.
There is another reason we ask these questions. Steel Tubular Fence does not have one panel size that works for every country and every project.
BDFENCE manufactures according to the required specification. So, for us, a useful panel size is not simply a number from a catalogue. It is a set of dimensions that can actually go to production.
Height: Tell Us What the Number Includes
Let us start with the 1.8m inquiry.
If the fence has flat pickets, the height is fairly easy to show on a drawing. With a spear or another projecting picket top, we need to know whether the stated height reaches the highest point.
This sounds like a small detail. It is not something we like to guess.
The same applies when a buyer asks for a taller fence. Increasing panel height affects more than the length of the vertical pickets. Posts, rails, connections and the installation conditions also come into the discussion.
For exposed sites or projects with specific structural requirements, these parts need to be considered together. We would not claim that one post specification is suitable for every fence of the same height without the relevant project information.

Width: Panel Size or Post-to-Post Distance?
This is a question we prefer to settle early.
A buyer may write:
Panel width: 2400mm
Another drawing may show 2400mm between posts.
Those two instructions are not necessarily identical.
The panel still needs to connect to the posts. Depending on the design, that connection may use brackets, tabs or another fixing arrangement.
So if your civil drawing already fixes the post locations, send us those dimensions. We can work from the actual layout instead of assuming that the nominal panel width is also the post center-to-center distance.
There Is No Reason to Make Every Bay as Wide as Possible
Sometimes buyers ask whether using a wider panel will reduce cost because fewer posts are needed.
Fewer bays may indeed reduce the number of posts along the same fence run. That is only one side of the calculation.
A wider panel also changes the span and panel weight. It can affect the rails, handling and other parts of the system.
For this reason, we do not recommend selecting the widest available panel only to reduce the post count.
The panel, post and connection should make sense together.
Now We Fill the Panel with Pickets
This is where two panels with the same outside size can become very different products.
Take a tubular picket.
Its specification needs an outside section. Because it is a hollow steel member, wall thickness also matters.
Then we need to know how the pickets are arranged across the panel.
One phrase often creates unnecessary confusion:
“Picket spacing: 100mm.”
Does that mean 100mm from one picket center to the next?
Or does it mean 100mm of clear space between the steel surfaces?
We would rather have this written clearly on the drawing than make an assumption.
For Purchasing, the Clear Gap Is a Useful Number
If you tell us the picket section and the clear opening, it becomes much easier to understand the intended layout.
For example, these are two separate pieces of information:
Picket: project-specified square tube
Clear opening: project-specified gap
We have deliberately not put a “standard” number here. The correct opening depends on the fence design and project requirements.
The important part is the measurement method.
When quotations from different suppliers use the same definition, the buyer has a much better basis for comparison.
A Narrower Gap Means More Than a Different Look
Keep the panel width unchanged and move the pickets closer together.
More pickets may be needed.
That adds tube. It adds welded joints. The finished panel can become heavier as well.
This is one of the reasons two suppliers can quote the same panel height and width at different prices.
Before deciding that one quotation is expensive, check what is actually inside the panel.
Flat, Spear or Another Picket Top?
The top is one of the easiest ways to change the appearance of Steel Tubular Fence.
A project may call for a simple flat finish. Another may use a formed point, spear, finial or another project-specific detail.
We treat this as part of the panel specification rather than something to choose after production starts.
It also brings us back to height. If the picket projects above the rail, the drawing should make clear whether the required fence height includes that projection.
Rails Do Not Get Much Attention Until the Specification Is Compared
Pickets are easy to see in product photos. Rails are less exciting, but they still need proper dimensions.
For a quotation, we want to know the rail section, wall thickness and quantity in each panel.
Their position matters too.
Move the upper rail and the visible picket length changes. Change the rail section and the welded relationship between the picket and rail changes with it.
When comparing two offers, check the rail specification instead of looking only at the picket size.
The Post Is Not Part of the Panel, but It Cannot Be Ignored
A fence panel eventually has to stand between something.
That is why BDFENCE reviews posts together with the panel specification.
The required post depends on factors such as fence height, bay arrangement, connections, gate locations and project conditions.
For taller or more exposed fencing, foundations and structural requirements may also need project-specific review.
We avoid giving a universal post size based only on panel height because that can create a false impression that site conditions do not matter.
Then We Reach the End of the Fence Line
This is where custom panel sizes become useful.
Perhaps the regular panels fit almost the whole boundary, but the final distance to a wall is shorter.
We can manufacture a closing panel for that position once the required dimension is confirmed.
We prefer this approach to making every bay a different width.
Use repeatable panels for most of the run. Use special widths where the site actually needs them.
It keeps the order easier to identify and avoids unnecessary customization.
Sloping Ground Needs a Drawing, Not a Guess
Steel Tubular Fence uses rigid fabricated panels, so uneven ground deserves attention before production.
Depending on the design, a project may use stepped sections or another arrangement prepared for the site.
If you have elevation information, send it with the inquiry.
Even a simple marked drawing showing the change in ground level is more useful than asking the factory to make “panels for a slope” without dimensions.
Gate Size Is a Separate Conversation
A pedestrian gate can match the fence. A vehicle gate can match it too.
By “match,” we mean the visual language: picket profile, spacing, height and finish can be coordinated with the fixed panels.
We do not mean that the gate should simply use the same frame as a fence panel.
A gate moves. A wide vehicle gate has different frame and support requirements from a fixed bay.
When sending an inquiry, give the gate opening separately. If you know the required gate type, include that as well.
How We Prefer to Receive a Steel Tubular Fence Inquiry
A formal engineering drawing is useful, but it is not required for the first conversation.
Some customers send a BOQ. Some send a PDF drawing. Others send a sketch with dimensions.
All can work as a starting point.
For a more accurate quotation, try to show:
- total fence length or required quantity;
- finished fence height;
- panel width or the required post layout;
- picket section and wall thickness;
- clear opening between pickets;
- rail specification;
- post specification if already decided;
- pedestrian and vehicle gate openings;
- surface treatment and color;
- delivery destination.
Do not worry if every item has not been decided yet.
Tell us which dimensions are fixed by the project and which ones are still open. That is more useful than filling the RFQ with numbers that may change later.

Before You Ask for the “Standard Size”
There is nothing wrong with asking a supplier what sizes they manufacture.
Just do not stop there.
A Steel Tubular Fence panel is defined by more than its outside rectangle. The picket section, wall thickness, clear opening, rails and top design all change what you are buying.
The site adds another layer: posts, gates, short closing sections and ground conditions.
If you already have a fence drawing, send it to us. If you only have the basic dimensions, send those instead.
We can start from what you have.

FAQ
Does Steel Tubular Fence have one standard panel size?
No single size applies to every country and every project. BDFENCE can manufacture panels according to confirmed project dimensions. If you already have a drawing or BOQ, send it with your inquiry.
Should I give the panel width or post spacing?
If both are important, give both. The physical panel width and the installed post layout are not automatically the same because the connection design also takes up space.
What does clear picket gap mean?
It is the open distance between the facing surfaces of two neighboring pickets. This is different from measuring from the center of one picket to the center of the next.
Why do you need the tube wall thickness?
Because pickets, rails and posts are hollow steel sections. Outside dimensions alone do not completely describe them. Wall thickness is an important part of the material specification and quotation comparison.
Can BDFENCE produce different widths in the same order?
Yes. A project can use repeating main panels together with special-width sections where needed. Final quantities and dimensions should be confirmed before production.
Can the gate match the Steel Tubular Fence?
Yes. The visible design can be coordinated with the surrounding panels. The gate frame and support, however, need to suit the gate opening and operating design rather than simply copying the fixed panel construction.
What should I send if I do not have a complete fence drawing?
Send the information you already have: total length, height, preferred panel width, picket details, gate openings, finish and destination. A dimensioned sketch or marked image can also be useful for the first quotation discussion.
