A data center fence may look like one simple line on a site plan.
In reality, that line includes many parts: welded panels, steel posts, security fixings, corners, gates and special sections.
For a data center perimeter project in Virginia, USA, the project team selected 358 Anti-Climb Fence for part of the external security boundary.
From the supplier side, the main question was not only how many meters of fence the site needed.
Instead, we needed to understand how the full perimeter would work.
That meant checking the straight runs, gate openings, corners, post positions, fixing system and special areas before production.
Project Overview
| Project Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Virginia, USA |
| Application | Data Center Perimeter |
| Fence Type | 358 Anti-Climb Fence |
| Customer Type | Project Contractor / Infrastructure Buyer |
| Main Supply | 358 Panels, Posts, Security Fixings and Related Components |
| Project Focus | Perimeter Layout, Access Points, Post/Fixing Match and Complete Supply Scope |
The Straight Fence Runs Were the Simple Part
Once the project team confirmed the 358 Fence specification, the long straight sections became easy to repeat.
The same panel type could continue across many bays.
Likewise, the same post and fixing setup could repeat where the design allowed it.
This repetition helped production stay organized.
However, the full perimeter was not one continuous straight line.
The more important review started where the regular fence stopped.
We Broke the Perimeter into Smaller Sections
Rather than treating the site as one total length, we looked at each change in the fence line.
These areas included:
- corners;
- pedestrian gates;
- vehicle gates;
- walls or building interfaces;
- changes in direction;
- changes in ground level;
- sections with different security details.
This made the material list more accurate.
For example, a straight run mostly repeats the same components. A gate adds its own frame, posts and hardware. Meanwhile, a corner changes the panel and post relationship.
So total fence length alone does not tell a supplier enough.
The 358 Mesh Was Only the Starting Point
358 Fence gets its name from the close welded mesh.
Still, buyers should not compare suppliers by product name alone.
The project specification should also confirm the panel size, mesh opening, wire diameter and finish.
Posts and fixings matter just as much.
Two suppliers can both quote “358 Fence” while using different post sections, wall thicknesses or fixing systems.
Because of that, the final prices may describe two different fence packages.
Posts Had to Match the Panels and Fixings
358 panels are rigid welded units.
They cannot stretch to correct a layout mistake on site.
So the post spacing needs to match the actual panel and fixing system.
This is why we do not treat panel width and post center spacing as the same number automatically.
The connection detail sits between the panel and the post.
As a result, civil work and fence supply should follow the same approved layout.
If crews set the post positions before they confirm the correct spacing, they may create a problem that appears only during installation.
The Post Specification Needed Real Numbers
Terms such as “security post” or “heavy-duty post” sound useful, but they do not give a factory enough information.
We need the actual post section, wall thickness, length and finish.
Fence height also matters, but it is not the only factor.
For example, site exposure, gate locations, post spacing and the mounting method can all affect the final post setup.
For engineered projects, the approved post and foundation drawing should control the installation.
Small Fixings Became a Large Quantity
A single clip is a small part.
Across a large data center perimeter, however, the total quantity quickly becomes important.
So a quotation that says only “clips included” may not tell the buyer enough.
The better question is:
Which fixing system does this fence use, and does the quantity match the panel and post layout?
Bolts and other hardware should also appear clearly in the supply scope.
These items do not cost as much as the main steel. Even so, missing hardware can stop work on site.
The Pedestrian Gate Had to Fit the Fence Line
The data center needed controlled access for staff and visitors.
So the pedestrian entrance became its own part of the fence schedule.
The gate could match the surrounding 358 Fence in height and mesh style where the project required it.
However, the gate still needed its own frame, hinges, lock setup and support posts.
A gate is not simply a 358 panel with hinges added.
This detail matters when buyers compare quotations because one supplier may include a complete gate assembly while another may quote only the nearby fence panels.
The Vehicle Entrance Changed the Supply Scope Again
A wider gate creates a larger break in the perimeter.
The project may use a swing gate, sliding gate or another access system.
Whatever the design, the gate frame and support posts need their own specification.
Meanwhile, the fixed panels on each side must finish in the correct position.
For this reason, we recommend listing every vehicle gate separately in the BOQ.
Do not hide gate openings inside the total fence length.
Corners Needed More Attention Than Their Size Suggested
A corner takes up very little space on a drawing.
Still, it changes the direction of the whole fence.
Panels approach the corner from different sides, so the post and fixing arrangement needs to follow the approved detail.
For a large perimeter, several corners can change the number of special posts and related fittings.
That is another reason why a drawing helps more than a simple “price per meter” request.
Already Have a Data Center Fence BOQ?
Send it directly to BDFENCE.
You do not need to rewrite the project documents for us.
We can use your current BOQ, fence schedule or technical drawing as the basis for quotation.
This also makes supplier comparison easier because your purchasing team can compare the same panel, post, fixing, gate and finish requirements.
If the drawing leaves one detail open, we can mark it as an open point instead of guessing.

Panel Alignment Started with the Layout
Good panel alignment does not begin when installers tighten the last bolt.
It starts with the post positions.
If the first few posts are out of line, the error can become more visible as the fence continues.
Rigid 358 panels give installers less room to hide layout mistakes.
Therefore, the regular bays need consistent setting-out.
At special locations, such as the space between a gate and a wall, the project may need a shorter closing panel.
Where the drawing allows it, making that panel before shipment can reduce cutting and adjustment on site.
The Ground Level Also Affected the Fence
A site plan shows the perimeter from above.
It does not always show every change in elevation.
If the ground rises or falls, rigid welded panels need a layout that suits the slope.
For example, the project may use stepped sections or another approved method.
That can affect post lengths, panel positions and ground clearance.
So if the site has a noticeable slope, send the elevation information with the fence drawings.
The Finish Needed More Than a Color Name
A data center fence stays outdoors year after year.
So the project should define the coating system, not only the color.
Depending on the specification, the fence may use galvanizing, powder coating or a combined system.
If the design requires a specific color, include the color reference as well.
However, do not judge corrosion performance by the words “galvanized” or “powder coated” alone.
The full coating specification, site exposure, installation condition and maintenance all matter.
The Factory Order Became Several Material Groups
By the time production started, the project no longer looked like one simple line of fence.
It had several groups of parts.
| Component Group | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Main 358 panels | Regular perimeter sections |
| Steel posts | Support the panels |
| Security fixings | Connect panels to posts |
| Special panels | Close short or unusual sections |
| Pedestrian gate components | Staff and visitor access |
| Vehicle gate components | Controlled vehicle access |
| Other accessories | Project-specific fence details |
This breakdown also helped with quantity checks and packing.
Inspection Focused on the Actual Order
A finished panel may look correct from a distance.
That does not prove the full order matches the project.
So production checks can cover panel dimensions, mesh, wire diameter, posts, fixings, gates, finish and quantities according to the confirmed specification.
Special parts need extra attention because there may be only a few of them.
For example, dozens of standard panels cannot replace one missing custom closing panel.
Packing Needed to Make Sense in Virginia
The team packing the fence in China will not be the team opening it in the United States.
Because of that, package identification matters.
Standard panels are easy to group.
Special panels, different post types and gate parts need clearer labels.
Where needed, package references can follow the project schedule.
This makes it easier for the receiving team to separate the right parts after unloading.
What Other B2B Buyers Can Learn from This Project
The main lesson is simple:
Do not compare 358 Fence suppliers by panel price alone.
First, check what the quotation includes.
Look at the panels, posts, fixings, gates, special sections and finish.
Then check whether both suppliers are quoting the same scope.
A lower price can mean a more efficient supplier.
However, it can also mean that some parts are missing from the offer.
The BOQ helps you tell the difference.

FAQ
Why is 358 Fence used around data centers?
358 Fence has a close welded mesh that limits normal hand and foot holds while keeping the fence visually open. Whether it suits a specific data center should follow the site’s approved security design and local requirements.
What should a data center 358 Fence quotation include?
Check the panel specification, posts, fixing system, gates, special panels, finish and required accessories. Do not compare panel prices alone.
Can BDFENCE quote from an existing BOQ?
Yes. Send your BOQ, fence schedule, drawing or technical specification. We can use the same project documents as the starting point for our quotation.
Can one data center use different 358 Fence details?
Yes. Gates, slopes, short closing sections or different security zones may need different parts. The fence schedule should show each change clearly.
Can BDFENCE supply gates with the 358 Fence?
Yes. We can include pedestrian and vehicle gate components according to the confirmed gate design and project requirements.
Can I request a quote during the bidding stage?
Yes. Send the tender drawing, early BOQ or current fence specification. If some details are still open, mark them clearly. We can still prepare an initial quotation from the available information.
